The time I lost 100 pounds for Elvis

January 2000 - January 2001
In January 2000 I became an Elvis impersonator when I performed at the annual Elvis Invitationals at the Crocodile Cafe. I was the old, fat Elvis. After seeing my performance on videotape, I decided to lose weight so I could return the following year as the young, thin Elvis. I joined Jenny Craig and started exercising like a maniac, swimming 2 - 3 miles a day and bicycling every day. And next year, I did in fact return to play the young, thin Elvis. Following is the photo blog of my quest to be The King.

January 11, 2000 - 260 lbs.

The night I impersonated Elvis. Even without the weight factored in, this is just an exceptionally bad photo. But man is it a great motivator. Unfortunately the girl is not with me. On the positive side, I did make 5th place out of 12!

February 15, 2000 - 240 lbs.

A couple of days before my 4th weekly weighing, so possibly a bit less than 240 lbs. Big victory this week: I threw a party and managed not to eat a single party snack. I did have a piece of birthday cake, but I'd promised myself that in advance.

March 2, 2000 - 227 lbs.

Still averaging 5 pounds of weight loss a week, thanks to massive exercise. I swim 2 miles each weekday, and bike every day, usually for several hours on the weekends. I also feel comfortable now making my own meal decisions a couple of days a week, and I don't have much trouble resisting the temptation of junk food.

April 14, 2000 - 206 lbs.

Down 56 pounds and partying hard at week 12. This is the week I discovered I look good in orange. I'm now swimming not two but three miles a day, and have begun doing various calisthenics, in addition to plenty of bike riding.

May 6, 2000 - 197 lbs.

Seen here at a combination Cinco de Mayo / birthday party. The rockin' 70's outfit I'm wearing came together as if by magic in one glorious afternoon of 2nd hand shopping. The blue blazer is an authentic 1988 Kingdome usher's jacket with Kingdome patch and the original wearer's name tag still on it. And yes, that is a gold medallion I'm wearing.

May 23, 2000 - ??? lbs.

Back from two weeks of vacation in Virginia and Florida with my first tan in years. I haven't been weighed since before vacation, so I don't know if I gained, lost or maintained while managing my own meals without Jenny Craig.

July 8, 2000 - 183 lbs.

Still got ten or fifteen pounds to go, but doing pretty good. I've been hovering around this weight for a few weeks now due to a double whammy: nightmare project keeping me past midnight every day, and a broken toe after dropping a railroad tie on it. I also see now how nearly impossible it would've been to lose weight if I'd still been working all the long hours I used to.

January 6, 2001 - 170 lbs.

It's good to be the King!
